Why Study Hitler and World War II? Expulsion of Intellectual Thought

 Eradication of intellectual thought capable of:  1) Resisting radical Nazi plans for injury to human life; 2) Exposing suppressed history; or 3) Planned population disruption through political control––was rife in Hitler’s Germany.
 Thus, in Hitler’s ‘Nazied’ way of thinking, academic scholars of Jewish descent whose racial and/or cultural backgrounds gave them foresight to recognize, and perhaps publicly criticize Nazis’ militant direction had to be the first to go. 

 In correlation with assaults on non-Nazi newspapers and ceremonial book-burnings, Hitler’s most overt anti-intellectual movement was against Jewish intellectuals: scientists, writers, Communists social historians, and other thinkers who could not fit the Aryan racial model.

 As Jean Medawar and David Pyke point out in their book, ‘Hitler’s Gift: The True Story of the Scientists Expelled By the Nazi Regime,’ many of the Jewish scientists––such as Albert Einstein and Max Born––actually played a seminal role in Hitler’s eventual defeat.

 By the time he migrated to the United States, Einstein’s  prominence had placed him at prestigious Princeton University, and eventually gave him access to President Roosevelt where he advocated for construction of the Atomic Bomb. 

 Known as the ‘father of quantum mechanics,’ Born had the distinction of receiving Hitler’s personally signed expulsion from his university.  Like Einstein, Born became a Nobel Prize winner.  In his 1954 Nobel acceptance speech, Born said he was awarded the Prize for the affect his work had on “human thinking.”
 Some of those scientists and other intellectuals who escaped from Germany were not able to rebuild their lives.  They had lost accolades of academic status, sources of income, homes, and possessions.  Yet in the end, it all was Germany’s lost.  After the overthrow of Nazi power, German universities never regained the international recognition they had before the purge. 

 However, just as in newspaper and book declines, American universities have been sorely hammered by internet advocation for technical, job-related education.  Our nation’s grand Liberal Arts Colleges and Universities that once stressed the greatness of intellectual exercise are in great decline.  Now community colleges, not requiring PhD professors, cover slight literature, history, language, grammar classes, etc.––usually on-line without interpersonal participation.
 Private sector and government grants to research universities come primarily for engineering, medical or other scientific graduate studies––and most students in those departments are not Americans, but foreigners.

 So whether by intention or not, again the internet helps to bring down America’s intellectual greatness.  As Bible historical books teach:  “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23: 7).  So what happened to Germany can happen to a nation that does not teach people to think in a free, non-politicized intellectual atmosphere.
