Why Study Hitler and World War II? The Death of Newspapers

During Hitler’s reign, three additional warnings about his nefarious intentions for European societies were: 1)  Banishment of newspapers openly critical of his regime to the point of imprisoning or ‘eliminating’ editors and writers; 2)  Astonishing campaigns of book burnings throughout Germany, and 3) Expulsion of intellectual scholars capable of resisting his ruin of the nations.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum expounds:  “When Hitler came to power in 1933, Germany had a well-developed communications infrastructure. Over 4,700 daily and weekly newspapers were published annually in Germany, . . . with a total circulation of 25 million. . . small town presses dominated newspaper circulation (81% of all German newspapers were locally-owned).”

Before Hitler’s total rule over Germany, Nazis controlled only three percent of print media.  But his rule brought the demise of all other political parties, and thus the downfall of hundreds of  newspapers that supported them.  Hitler’s forces seized presses and turned them over to the Nazi propaganda machine.

In ‘Nazi Propaganda,’ Holocaust Encyclopedia writes that accompanying the death of free press in Germany, “Hitler established a Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda headed by Joseph Goebbels. The Ministry’s aim was to ensure that the Nazi message was successfully communicated through art, music, theater, films, books, radio, educational materials, and the press.”

A Canadian TV miniseries, ‘Hitler:  The Rise of Evil,’ tells the story of German journalist Fritz Gerlich who tried to resist Nazi violence and intimidation by forming his own newspaper.  But in the end Gerlich, already detained at the Dachau concentration camp, was brutally beaten to death.

While most may see no relationship between Hitler abolishing Germany’s free press and the demise of newspapers in the United States––the results could dangerously be the same.  Numerous studies chronicle the death of newspapers in the U.S. brought about by declining ad revenues and readerships.

Unfortunately, too many Americans believe they can get the same news on television and the internet.  However, newspapers generally are not subject to governmental control, while television is under strict governmental control.

Moreover the internet is increasingly threatened with such ‘official’ controls, and is also at the whim of nature’s storms, and utility companies’ power outages.  Moreover, ‘news’ from both sources seems controlled by either political party, and generally discusses what such parties prefer––and thus could be mere propaganda.

As in Hitler’s day such dominance over ‘truth’ sets the stage for cultural and moral weakening, ultimate economic collapse, and war!  Such suppression of truth is anathema to God.  As Bible inspired writing attests:  “Howbeit when He,The Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come (John 16: 13).”

Why Study Hitler and World War II? Good Questions! Part 3

By the time Hitler led Germany into war: 1) 98% of her churches were taken over by political manipulation; 2) Witchcraft, paganism and other non-Christian spiritual and sexual behaviors metastasized; and 3) the impulse for military and economic superiority hardened Germans into acceptance of mass theft and murder.

The United States and her leaders should be particularly concerned about similar declining morality that is creeping upon us––with both political, religious and cultural encouragement, acceptance and approval.

In ‘Western Moral Decline or Capitalist Decadence?” jonkofas.blogspot.com points out that usually in periods of economic slowdowns, national leadership tries to steer the populace toward discussion of values, rather than finances. Such love of money now substitutes moral values in the U.S.: “More than political trends, material conditions influence evolving value systems, something that is evident in the consumerist values (to which we must add hedonist and atomistic) of much of the world in the last fifty years.

“The relative decline of compassion for humanity, and a rise of alienation which many try to cure by going to therapy, and with legal and illegal drugs, has been sharply on the increase in the last half century . . .

“Having conditioned citizens as consumers steeped in that frame of mind and value system, how do elites now try to tell them . . . what exactly does that do for the high structural unemployment and under-employment, the low wage structure, the lack of opportunities for college graduates, the lack of job security.”

But economic conclusions alone are insufficient to explain the present instability of America’s moral character. Even through The Great Depression, the nation maintained its care of the poor, its goals of life-long marriage and the next generation of children being more blessed and secure than the one before.

The history of Israel is a microcosm of God’s dealings with all nations.  When the Israel of the Old Testament obeyed His laws and followed His will, the nation was blessed.  When its people refused to obey Him, and preferred to mimic the practices of heathen nations around them, those blessings were removed––gradually as God hoped that reproof would bring repentance.

But as Christian non-fiction Prophecy Books attest, Israel chose heathenism: “And if ye shall despise my statutes . . .  I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror . . . And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins (Leviticus 26: 15 – 18).”  As ungrateful Israel shunned God’s way of living, she was eventually destroyed.

God has blessed the United States more than most nations in the history of the world. But with increasing tornadoes, hurricanes, drought, mass murders, etc., even now we watch those blessings gradually fade away. Let us use the good sense to turn back to God’s way of living before we suffer the fate of other nations that forget Him!

Why Study Hitler and World War II? Good Questions! Part 2

Americans must be aware of events that could lead to the type of Police State, as in the rigid population controls that reigned in Hitler’s Germany.  Signs that such a slide is possible include:  1) Growing poverty and low economic growth; 2) Declining moral standards; 3) Propensity to guns and violence as in the cases of Sandy Hook Elementary School, etc.; 4)  Excessive police and law enforcement controls during public demonstrations as in Occupy Wall Street, etc.

Among his ‘25 Signs That America Is Rapidly Becoming More Like Nazi Germany,’ Michael of ‘The American Dream writes:  “Nazi Germany was a totalitarian Big Brother police state that constantly monitored everything that German citizens did. Today, the bureaucrats. . . are also absolutely obsessed with constantly trying to monitor us. . . .now control freaks that inspect the lunches of preschool students in order to make sure that they contain the “right” foods . . .

“Nazi officials often used their positions of power to force others to do dehumanizing things.  TSA agents in Dallas singled out female passengers to undergo screening in a body scanner, . . . several women who said they felt the screeners intentionally targeted them to view their bodies.  In Nazi Germany, authorities could stop you and search you at any time and for any reason.  Last year, TSA “VIPR teams” conducted approximately 8,000 “unannounced security screenings” at subway stations, bus terminals, seaports and highway rest stops.”

In a series of internet articles, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum intricately describes the Nazi Police State.  One article, ‘German Police:  From Weimar Republic to Nazi Dictatorship,’ explains that before Hitler, police were merely politically conservative, but not Nazis.  They blamed Germany’s World War I loss on weak government, and they lauded Nazi strength, depending on Hitler to rehire laid off policemen, because crime in Germany had skyrocketed.

Another Holocaust Museum article, ‘The Nazi Terror Begins,’ asserts:  “After Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany in January 1933 . . . He persuaded his Cabinet to declare a state of emergency and end individual freedoms, including freedom of press, speech, and assembly. Individuals lost the right to privacy, . . . officials could read people’s mail, listen in on telephone conversations, and search private homes without a warrant.”

Those stockpiling guns preparing for government crack-downs following the Sandy Hook massacre may stage armed revolt––as in the cases of Ruby Ridge and Branch Davidians vs. the U.S.A.––can easily cause our legitimately-elected government to impose such a “state of emergency.”

And walla!  A Police State in America.  Such a scenario is not just the plot of ‘anti-Christian fiction.’ It is very possible.  No good can come of these thousands of guns, rifles and ammunition clips now flooding our country.  We must change this historical propensity for violence:  “But let man . . . cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn . . . from the violence that is in their hands (Jonah 3: 8).”
