God’s Faithful Soldiers Love and Serve Him First

god-first-alwaysMany believers are A.W.O.L. today because they simply do not put their Heavenly General, The LORD Jesus Christ, Number One to be listened to and obeyed on their priority list.  They do not speak or pray to Him, or even pray in His Name very often.  They do not consult Him about major decisions in their lives (or even minor ones).  They seldom witness for Him.  And, in their minds, simply going to church once a week gives Him—supposedly the Number One Commander in their lives—the respect that God’s Holy Word deems He is due.

Such shallow, kindergarten thinking renders these types of professing Christians practically useless in these last days—the most important days in the annals of human existence—when God needs all of His people on the battlefield, not obstructing His march to victory, but supporting it.  (Be sure to visit earthend-newbeginning.com, our sister blog, to view the story of Jonah and the self-inflicted wounds he paid for not following God’s will in the battle for human souls.)

Rather, consider King David, who had a strong, hard-fought army behind him, fighting with, and for him, because they admired him as a great fighter who had set an enduring example before them, when, as a teen-age boy, he defeated the 12-foot tall giant Goliath.  Thus, David’s men followed him, respecting him as a soldier and honoring him, as their king. Moreover, they knew he was a general who never moved on the battlefield without consulting God as to which way to go and what to do.  Most of all they followed, obeyed and served David because they loved him as a man loves a father, a brother and a fellow soldier:

“Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.

“But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel (2 Samuel 21: 15 – 17).”  Thus, David’s soldiers learned to kill the many giants standing in the way of their entire kingdom’s victory by following his teachings about war, and by following his examples of what a fearless soldier can and should do:

“And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

“And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him.  These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants (2 Samuel 21: 18 – 22).”

Remember who these giants were: the sons of women who “married,” co-habited, had sex with, fallen angels, beginning in Genesis chapter 6 and possibly even before, during “the world that then was” (see 2 Peter 3: 6). This—the most outlandish sin before God in both earthly and heavenly spheres—continued after Noah’s flood.  These sinful sexual relations resulted in the birth of the super-human and innately spiritual enemies that Joshua and Caleb’s armies fought just to get into the Promised Land.  And these vicious obstructions remained to prevent David from redeeming Israel from its previous failures, and from establishing the united and thriving kingdom that would become everlasting Israel—God’s eternal home on earth.

Is it any wonder that God, Our Gracious Heavenly Father, loves such fearless fighters and refers to love-for-godthose, such as David, as being after His own heart? Such fighters are always willing to fight the giants in their lives—those supernatural forces trying to prevent them from reaching the goals which God deems necessary for the Christian’s victories on earth and in heavenly spheres.
Wholesale Christian Bibles makes clear that God needs men and women today who are fiercely dedicated to fighting giant forces on earth today such as:

1) Dedicated intercessors who pray hours a day, standing in  the Gap against forces ready to bring down their nation and other regions—“ And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none (Ezekiel 22: 30);

2) Missionary workers in foreign countries on faith, without denominational support, obeying their Savior’s command: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16: 15);

3) Evangelist-prophets such as Elijah, unknown but waiting in the wings for God’s call to step on man-manipulated platforms and bring whole nations back to God: “And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word (1 Kings 17: 1).”

Today’s true soldiers of God are not A.W.O.L. as Jonah was. Rather they are AWOL in God’s sense—i.e. they are Always Waiting On The LORD, looking to God, The Father, God, The Son and God, The Holy Spirit to give them Their march and attack orders.  These are today’s armies, ready to serve Their General Jesus Christ, because He has already slain the giant Satan, and they are fighting in His Army because they respect, admire and love Him as Their Savior, God and King, now and forever!

Too Many Christian Soldiers Today Are A.W.O.L.

eph6_10-11    Remember that old-time Gospel Hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers, Going Forth to War”?  It was very famous in the 19th Century, during America’s Civil War, for fighters who believed their cause fulfilled God’s will. Ephesians, chapter 6, as well as other New Testament passages, makes clear that God considers all who believe in His Son Jesus to be soldiers in His army, working and fighting for Him:

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (6: 10 – 12).”

Apostle Paul goes further into military analogy in the next few verses.  But first, note that he warns believers that the Christian’s battle is against Satan, not against people—or, as he calls them, flesh and blood—but rather against the organized hosts in Satan’s army, moving up the triangularly-shaped satanic ladder from the least demons to the highest powers in the heavens and space.  When Christians get serious about serving God, this army stirs up spiritual enemies (these may sometimes enlist human beings) to thwart their advance.
Often such an advance can be held up for days, weeks or even years. As Apostle Paul writes in Romans 15: 20 – 22: “Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel not where Christ was named  . . . For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.”  And in 1 Thessalonians 2: 18, he writes again: “Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.”

Today, very many Christian workers are hindered from fulfilling the specific callings they have from will-work-for-jesusGod, too often for worldly reasons.  These believers are simply A.W.O.L. They are Absent Without Leave!  They are not where they should be, and they are not doing what God has called them to do.  Some believers, like the prophet Jonah (see last week’s entries in our sister blog, earthend-newbeginnings.com),they simply do not what to do what they knew called has called them to do.

Others simply put off God’s work for various reasons–i.e. until their children are grown or have finished college, or until they retire from an earthly job, or until they save enough money, etc. Isn’t it amazing the things one puts in front of doing God’s will?)  And still others do not know what their exact calling is.  For this last group, earnest prayer is necessary until God reveals His calling on their lives. In the case of all the others, continuous prayer and absolute surrender to the will of God is primary.  In all cases it is Satan and his cohorts who move within the Christian’s life to weaken God’s army.

To operate against such forces, Paul continues in Ephesians 6: “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints (6: 13 – 18).”

There are so many important words in this passage from wholesale Christian Bibles, but take note of the last two: “perseverance” and “supplication”: Never Give Up! And always pray for yourself, your ministry and the ministries of other Christians. And meanwhile, think about this: just who do you think will fill your empty space in God’s army to fight the Last Battle that is soon to come upon the earth. Who will take your place to fulfill God’s will, and how much of the reward that you were suppose to have received will they get?
