How Much Do Christians Really Know About Hell?

As we look to these last days of all of mankind’s time on earth facing increasing persistence of natural and man-made disasters, as well as constant threats of nuclear and other wars that could wipe out whole nations (i.e. EMP strikes), it seems that Biblical knowledge among believers—along with individual Christian’s commitment to Christ and His Word—all grow weaker and weaker.

Often I ask Christians who have gone to churches for decades questions such as: Can you “Name ten Books of the New Testament written by Apostle Paul,” or “Name Five or Six of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Old Testament,” or explain “Who is ‘most excellent Theophilus’?’’Or “What did Ezra and Nehemiah do for Israel”—most come up dreadfully short of answers.

This is discouraging to Bible teachers, most of whom do not minister in churches, because too many pastor/preachers insist that indeed they are the only teachers necessary. So let’s try an even harder question for blog-reading Bible students: “Can you Name and Define/Discuss the Five Compartments of Hell?” No? Well let’s give it a try.

Shall we start with one which proves God’s distain for disobedience? That is Tartarus, the division separated for those fallen angels who revolted with Satan, came to earth to have sex with women, and produce monster non-human giants to rule over mankind. Apostle Peter writes of them: “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;. . . The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the Day of Judgment to be punished (2 Peter 2: 4 – 9).”

After His physical death on The Cross, The Lord Jesus visited this special division in Hell to further preach against disobedience: “By which also He went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient . . . (1 Peter 3: 19 – 20). Hmm, Does this mean that God can send people to hell for being disobedient? Apostle Jude says further,“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day (1: 6).” So are Jude and other Apostles saying that there will be another judgment, even after Hell?

A ‘good’ part of Hell, if there can be any such thing, is called Paradise. It is the place where Satan kept Old Testament saints under wrap until they could be fully redeemed by the shed blood of Christ. Remember what Christ said to the prisoner on the cross who cried out to be saved: “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise (Luke 23: 43).” So for the three days and three nights that His physical body was in the grave, The LORD’s soul and spirit was ministering in Hell. And when He came—Body, Soul and Spirit—out of the grave and out of Hell, The Great Redeemer brought all of the saints out of Hell and took them to Heaven with Him. Thus, Paradise in Hell under the earth is totally empty now!

Third, there is that compartment of Hell, the temporary prison, where ordinary everyday sinners go. It too is just called ‘Hell’. In the four Gospels recording parts of His earthly ministry, The LORD Jesus speaks often of this Hell: “And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire (Matthew 18: 9).”

He even warns that whole cities can be cast into Hell: “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day (Matthew 11: 23).” Then the Savior adds that no matter what happens in this life, believers must always respect and fear God, The Father: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10: 28).”

Then there is the Abyss or bottomless pit, which is reserved for all kinds of demons, ‘beasts, and fallen angels, but not for people. Apostle John describes them in The Book of Revelation this way: “The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is (17: 8).”

This last one galls so much because television, etc., preachers and evangelists use it to warn about Hell. But actually no one is in this place yet. All in Hell, in the grave and on earth who are not “in Christ” on The Final Judgment Day will be sent to this “lake of fire” after The Great White Throne judgment when they must stand before God The Father and answer for their sins: “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night
forever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20: 10 – 15).”

We will write more about these issues later, but beloved, don’t you agree that it is time for God’s people—true born again Christians—to open their wholesale Christian Bibles and get into His Word for themselves, to obey His callings on their lives, to repent and fast and pray more? We don’t have much time left, and we must pull as many people out of the potential of eternal fire as we can!
