Can’t Navigate Present or Future By Running Away from the Past, Pt 2

hitler_stalin_married        In the last blog, it was hinted that those living in the former East Germany do not experience the same shock when facing the truth about Hitler’s Nazi reign as their fellow citizens in the former West Germany.  East Germans survived under Communism from the time of WWII until 1990.  There they lived in suppressive political, military and economic rule of which other Germans can only imagine.

Life under Communism meant poor, harsh economic times wherein the state owned both means of production and items produced.  And such society meant controlled political ideology––denying all moral claims of religion or Christianity––in which all other political and social systems were deemed evil.

Russia’s Communism attempted to erase what East Germans remembered about German life before and during the Hitler years.  Having lived under both systems of supposedly different ideologies, East Germans were among the few Europeans who understood the close similarities between the two.

According to Wikipedia, “Hannah Arendt’s seminal work, ‘The Origins of Totalitarianism’ (1951), describes and analyzes the two major totalitarian movements of the twentieth century, Nazism and Stalinism [Communism]. She concludes that both Nazism and Stalinism were totalitarian movements that sought to eliminate all restraints upon the power of the State.”

Both systems demanded one party rule.  All organized opposition or rebellion was quickly squelched with potential opponents being imprisoned or killed.  Both relied heavily on undercover police forces and domestic military rule to suppress freedom of thought.  Both reinforced their regimes with constant propaganda and control of educational systems.  And both planned for and executed great geographic expansion through wars and mass murder.

In ‘A Century of Horrors:  Communism, Nazism, and the Uniqueness of the Shoah,’ Alain Besancon explains that both systems attempted to eliminate Judaism  and Christianity from national thought by substituting their ideologies as appropriate state religions:  “These two doctrines . . . have in common the idea of a collective salvation coming in history.”

In ‘Similarities Between Stalinism and Nazism,’ Wikipedia writes:  “Leading social democrat Kurt Schumacher Joseph-Stalin-Educationfamously said that the Stalinists of the KPD were “red-painted Nazis” and that the two movements enabled each other.”

Yet now nearly a century later, proponents of such rulership are long past dead.  Nazism, one of these murderous ideologies, is also dead.  And the other hangs on by weak threads in China and Cuba.  But the Biblical tenants in Christianity and Judaism still thrive, as they have for thousands of years.

In these end of days, men will try one last time to force world wars upon all people.  But because men are not God, or originators of this planet––such wisdom is doomed again to fail.  Just as the forces of God prevailed in the past, Axis and Allies History World War will again record “To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen (Jude 1: 25).”
